Research by Gemma Briggs of the Open University in the UK found that talking on the phone about spiders causes more driving errors among people who are spider-phobic than among people who are not, indicating that the emotional aspects of cell-phone conversations may affect drivers' ability to control their attention. In a study of 23 people operating driving simulators, the spider-phobics had an average of about 6.5 driving errors when conversing about spiders, compared with 4.5 for nonphobics.
